I experienced this on my recent summer vacation. Surprisingly, we did not get lost driving through four provinces to our east coast destination. We had Google Maps and road signs which were excellent in guiding us there and back again.

The Doppelganger

I get excited when I find one passage of scripture that’s virtually identical to another written by different authors at different times. In the case of Psalm 1, Jeremiah wrote exactly the same words to warn the nation of Israel. Was he copying the psalmist? I don’t know. But it makes me think that this piece of wisdom is very important.

For the Jewish people of the Old Testament, the image of a path or way was a metaphor for participating in a set of beliefs, teachings, or practices. Paul and the first Christians also called themselves “followers of the Way” (Acts 24:14).” What is the connection between the Psalm 1 “way” and the Acts 24:14 “the Way”?

Heaven and …

What comes to mind when you think of heaven? If you search “heaven” on Google Images, you might find caricatures with the following themes:

  • people waiting at the pearly gates for St. Peter to check the dossier for their name;
  • a location somewhere above the earth in a cloudy environment with a shining bright light; and
  • people with wings on their backs and halos over their heads floating around and maybe even playing a handheld harp.
